Cairo Part 7: Leaving the Windsor

On Saturday. we learned we would be picked up and moved out of the Windsor to the Flamenco. The cars can not get through. so we check back into the hotel. The next morning, we prepare to leave the Windsor again, and this time, it works. The car we are picked up in is a small taxi with two people already in it. Windsor staff help when one of them (Sameer) brings his car.  We say goodbye to the staff.

So many bags - such a small car,

The little mosque and kiosk outside the hotel look very different by this point.

Cairo Part 6: Back to the Windsor

The central symbol of the Cairo experience - the afternoon we were locked in the Windsor.

Tear gas is fired. We all experience it for the first time.
We prepare to leave the Windsor for the first time, but efforts to get us out failed as cars dispatched to the Windsor could not get through. We check back into the Windsor and wait another day to see if conditions are better.

Cairo Part 5: ELFs phone home

We took computers to the lounge and discovered that nobody could get online. Phones have already been cut off, and we learn the internet has been cut, as well.  Internet remains off, but phones come on again. One by one, we call home from the office of the hotel owner. He times our calls with his cell phone.

Cairo Part 4: First protest groups on Friday

We learn that things are going to start getting rough after noon prayers on Friday. No tourist spots are open. We go up to the hotel roof to observe after returning from the Antiquities Museum.

 Abel.
The first wave of protesters come into view.

 Streets start to fill up.
Abel gives us a sprig of basil.

Police form a barrier and start shooting off tear gas. Our eyes and lips begin to burn, and we begin to cough.

Tear gas starts to permeate the air.
We watch Al Jazeera with the owner of the Windsor and with other guests.

We look out windows...

One guest goes outside and brings back a tear gas canister. (I now read that these are U.S.-made.)
